Summer is the season I have to be the most intentional about my hair. The sun, the heat, the humidity and if you have kids, add pool days and last-minute everything to that list. My hair shows damage fast, and it loses moisture even faster when it’s stressed by the elements.
For a long time I treated summer like something to just get through, hair-wise. I’d notice the breakage and the dullness around August and wonder what happened. Now I actually have a warm-weather routine that I start in June, before the damage has a chance to sneak up on me.
This post covers everything I’m doing this summer to keep my hair healthy: the products, the habits, and a few small shifts that have honestly made a big difference.
Moisture Is Everything in the Summer
If there’s one thing summer has taught me about hair care, it’s that moisture has to come first. Everything else builds on top of it. When my hair is properly hydrated, it’s more flexible, less prone to breakage, and it handles the stress of summer so much better. When it’s dry, the humidity and sun find every weak point.
The method that’s worked best for me is the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) layered in that order. My go-to styles this season are the ones that balance protection with low effort. Braids and twists are my favourites because they last, they look intentional, and I can refresh them quickly in the mornings. This is the step I used to skip completely and honestly the one that made the biggest difference once I started taking it seriously. We talk a lot about sun protection for our skin, but UV rays do a number on your hair too: drying it out, weakening strands, and fading colour if you have any. That extra sun exposure adds up faster than you’d think.
The simplest fix has been physical coverage. On long days outside I reach for a wide-brim hat or a silk scarf. It protects my hair and feels like an intentional part of the outfit. When I know I’ll be outside for a while, I’ll also add a leave-in or light oil with UV protection so my strands aren’t taking the full hit. My Simple Summer Wash-Day Routine

I start by gently detangling with my fingers or a wide-tooth comb while my hair still has product or oil in it, working in sections so I’m not fighting knots. From there I will either set it in twists or braids for a stretched style, or pop on a bonnet if I’m doing a protective style that week. The whole thing takes me about an hour to two or sometimes less. It’s not fancy, but it’s the rhythm that keeps my hair healthy all season.
Summer doesn’t have to mean damage and dryness. A little intention and a bit more moisture, a few protective choices, and some shade from the sun truly goes a long way.
